The Commonwealth of The Bahamas

The Bahamas is an archipelago of 700+ islands and cays (pronounced keys) – 29 of which are inhabited -- stretching from just off the coast of South Florida in the north to Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the south.

Most of the country’s 300,000-plus people live on New Providence, on which the capital of Nassau is located. Grand Bahama with its strong commercial hub and deepwater international port is the second most populated island. Eleuthera, Abaco, Exuma, Long Island, Inagua, Cat Island, Bimini and Andros also have populations sizeable enough to warrant schools, clinics, local government and regular air service, but of them all, Exuma in the central Bahamas and Abaco in the northwest Bahamas are the islands showing the most dramatic growth with real estate prices soaring as demand for the treasure of land increases.

A tropical climate and some of the best beaches in the world have long made this 100,000 square mile paradise a favorite with tourists. But this former British colony is also an attractive investment destination for international banks, resorts, shipping companies and second-home owners.

They are drawn by a well-educated, English-speaking workforce, a stable, democratic government, currency on par with the U.S. dollar, easy access to the United States and Europe via air travel, good communications, banking, transport, electricity, water and health care systems, and – the most tempting incentive of all -- a virtually tax-free lifestyle.

There are no capital gains, estate, sales, personal income or corporate taxes, and the real property tax is nominal. All these have combined to make The Bahamas one of the wealthiest countries in the Americas. While the majority of people are employed in the tourism and banking industries, agriculture, fishing and manufacturing also drive the economy.
